About the Poem
A Martian Sends a Postcard Home is a 34 lined, un-rhymed couplets poem.
This is a poem that puts the reader in the perception of a martian about earth in all aspects (natural phenomenon, how the people lives on earth.
Moral of the Poem
The Poem Although full of Figures of Speech, is a really entertaining piece. As what was said above, It puts the readers in the point of view of the Martian.
We can compare it to us when we are unfamiliar or not used to the environment. We describe things based on how we see it. Example when we visit another country, there are different cultures and traditions that are interesting in our eyes. A lot of those things are new to us that's why we describe it in a way that we are familiar.
In the poem, with us as the Martian we see things that we are used to but in a different perception. The Poem gives us a refreshing illustration of how life is on Earth in the perception of an alien from the planet Mars.

A Martian visits the earth there he saw a caxtons that he thought could fly but it never did. He saw the mists, he thought that it indicated that the sky was tired therefore it rests on the ground and blurs its surroundings. Next he was the rain, where everything turned like in the television the colors were much darker.
Then he saw a Model T, or a car he saw that it was locked on the inside and can only be opened by a turning of a key. It also included a film or the mirrors in case someone forgets or miss something to see. Next he described a wristwatch, it was tied to the wrist and is sometimes in a form of a box ad just won’t stop ticking.
The telephone is a haunted apparatus that produces sounds and is picked by the people and is also waken up when they want to talk with it. Then The Martian describes the punishment room or the bathroom where the adults go in and produces painful noises and only the children are allowed to do their business even outside.
And lastly, the Martian describes the people sleeping. Humans goes in pairs and read themselves.
The things the Martian described was:Books Mist Rain Car Wristwatch Telephone Bathroom Sleeping
Craig Raine (1979)
Caxtons are mechanical birds with many wings
and some are treasured for their markings–
they cause the eyes to melt
or the body to shriek without pain.
I have never seen one fly, but
sometimes they perch on the hand.
("The object that the Martian sees in the 1st and 6th lines in the poem is a "Book")
Mist is when the sky is tired of flight
and rests its soft machine on ground:
then the world is dim and bookish
like engravings under tissue paper.
("The object that the Martian sees in the 7th and 10th lines in the poem is a "Mist")
Rain is when the earth is television.
It has the property of making colours darker.
("The object that the Martian sees in the 11st and 12th lines in the poem is a "Rain")
Model T is a room with the lock inside –
a key is turned to free the world
for movement, so quick there is a film
to watch for anything missed.
("The object that the Martian sees in the 13t and 16th lines in the poem is a "Automobile/Car")
But time is tied to the wrist
or kept in a box, ticking with impatience.
("The object that the Martian sees in the 17th and 18th lines in the poem is a "Wristwatch")
In homes, a haunted apparatus sleeps,
that snores when you pick it up.
If the ghost cries, they carry it
to their lips and soothe it to sleep
with sounds. And yet, they wake it up
deliberately, by tickling with a finger.
("The object that the Martian sees in the 19th and 24th lines in the poem is a "Telephone")
Only the young are allowed to suffer
openly. Adults go to a punishment room
with water but nothing to eat.
They lock the door and suffer the noises
alone. No one is exempt
and everyone’s pain has a different smell.
("The object that the Martian sees in the 25t and 30th lines in the poem is a "Bathroom/Toilet")
At night, when all the colours die,
they hide in pairs
and read about themselves –
in colour, with their eyelids shut.
("The object that the Martian sees in the 31th and 34th lines in the poem is a "Sleeping People/2 persons sleeping in one bed")Explanation:
Book - Because a book looks likes a bird, when it flaps. Because a bird has a left and right wings. And also a Book has left and right pages, when you open it. And the pages is looks like a feather. And a book has also a markings on it. And the book will come up to our hands. "They cause the eyes to melt or the body to shriek without pain", means that when we read a books it can make us "cry" and that is the meaning of eyes to melt.
Mist - Because the Martian said that a sky is tired of flight and rest on ground. So when we think that the sky is tired and rest on the ground. So we must probably think that, the sky will go down in the ground. And it looks like a fog or a mist.
Rain - Because once it rains, you will probably get an umbrella and use it. So when you use the umbrella. The shadow of the umbrella was describing to the Martian, about "property of making colours darker." Because the surface will became darker because of the shadow of the umbrella. Because their is a rain occur. So we use umbrella.
Automobile/Car - A Model T refers to an "automobile" because a car has a lock inside and it looks like a room, because their is a door and window and also seated chairs. And "a film" refers to a rearview mirror, because once the car is moving or starting forward. Once you see the rearview mirror, while driving. It looks like a film because it's moving backwards and anything missed.
Wristwatch- Because wristwatch is a time that it looks like tied by a wrist. And it also ticking.
Telephone - The martian said that " that snores when you pick up". Snore means "ringing" so once a tellephone rings, we will pick up. And we will carry it and directly to the lips. In order to talk to the caller on the telephone.
Bathroom/Toilet - Because punishment room refers to a "bathroom". And we also bring water. Suffer reffers to "pooping". And the pain refers to "pooping while your face is looks like crumpled", because when we pain also, our face looks liked crumpled. And different smell refers to "smells bad because of poop."
Sleeping People - Because it's night time. And also when our eyelids shut, we are like sleeping. And they "hide in pairs" refers to a 2 people/couple that was fully blanket when they sleep. For more info:
